Description of the Commissions

Senate The Senate is the supreme governing authority of the University. Among other things it adopts rules for the entire University, passes multi-year and financial plans and issues statements on matters that concern the University as a whole. University: Senate (unibe.ch)
Commission for the Promotion of Early Career Researchers The Commission for the Promotion of Early Career Researchers advises and supports the Executive Board of the University of Bern in all matters concerning promotion of early career researchers. It oversees, among other things, specific university programs for the promotion of early career researchers, compiles recommendations, and is responsible for all information on the promotion of early career researchers. Commission for Quality Assurance and Development Quality assurance and development (QAD) is of a participatory nature and is borne by all members of the university through collaboration on committees or direct participation in the development, improvement, and review of performance (feedback, exchange, etc.). The Commission for Quality Assurance and Development, which advises the Executive Board of the University of Bern in all matters concerning quality assurance and development, forms the basis of the entire QAD organization. Gender Equality Commission The aim of the gender equality policy of the University of Bern is for all faculties, departments, institutes as well as administration to perceive gender equality issues and observe them in practice. Commission for Sustainable Development The Commission for Sustainable Development advises the Executive Board of the University of Bern in all matters pertaining to sustainable development in teaching, research, continuing education and services and at the level of operations and the overall university. Finance and Planning Commission The commission for finance and planning supports the executive board of the University of Bern in the allocation of personell and other resources, as well as in other matters of higher education planning.
Research Commission The commission evaluates applications for person and project funding, currently namely UniBE Initiator GrantsUniBE ID Grants and UniBE Doc.Mobility. It advises the Vice-Rectorate Research and other university committees on matters related to research funding and the evaluation of funding schemes. Within the scope of its activities and competence, the Research Commission can submit proposals and applications to the University Board of Directors or the Vice-Rectorate Research. Commission for International Relations The commission advises and supports the university management in all university-wide matters with international relevance. It monitors European and global developments in research, education and services at the higher education level with relevance to the University of Bern.
Digitalization Commission The university executive board is responsible for implementing and monitoring the digitalization strategy. Two bodies which will support the board with this task are currently being created. 
Appeal Committee The Appeal Committee is independent from the other university bodies and assesses appeals at first instance relating to announcements made by the faculty bodies and other organizational units at the University of Bern. University: Appeal Committee (unibe.ch)
Continuing Education Commission Continuing education at the university is organized locally by faculties, institutes and the Continuing Education Commission (known locally as the WBK). The WBK coordinates and supports continuing education at overall university level. It sets standards for continuing education courses and reviews these as part of study regulations approval. As an overall university commission, it ensures favorable general conditions, consistency and quality in continuing education. University: Continuing Education (unibe.ch) 
Central Library Commission The Central Library Commission is responsible for checking and supporting the university libary in their tasks. With its collection of printed and electronic media and a wide range of services, the university library supports university teaching and research as an academic library. As a cantonal library, the university library is also open to a wide public and thus promotes personal continuing education. University: Central Library Commission (unibe.ch)
Mensa Operations Foundation The mensa foundation manages its assets, defines the basic rules of operation for the mensa facilities, and awards contracts as to who operates the facilities. The mensa foundation also manages its property assets by maintaining and renting them out.
Mensa Commission The mensa commission links the mensa facility operators ZFV and the facility users. The commission is responsible for keeping in contact with the property commission and can submit requests to the mensa operations foundation.
Forum for University and Society The Forum for University and Society is a network of representatives from science and practice. The forum brings together, clarifies and evaluates current knowledge on selected topics in series of events. The aim is to make expert knowledge accessible to the public. Forum for University and society (unibe.ch)
Collegium Generale The Collegium generale promotes the interdisciplinary dialogue and networking within the university through events and seminars for faculty members and students from all fields of study. Archive Commission According to the regulations governing the archive committee of the University of Bern, the task of the archive committee is to advise and support the Executive Board of the University of Bern with the archiving system. University: Archives (unibe.ch)
Social Fund Commission of the SUB The SUB Social Fund supports SUB, MVUB members, and mobility students who find themselves in acute financial emergencies. In order to tackle these financial difficulties, the Social Fund Commission can raise up to CHF 5000 in form of a support contribution or loan. SUB Social Fund (sub.ch)
Committee 120% Care Grant The Care Grant allows junior researchers with care responsibilities who are employed 80%-100% (see section 7 of the 120% Care Grant Regulations) to temporarily reduce their employment level to at least 60%. A support person is then employed whose employment usually overlaps with that of the applicant by a maximum of 20% (thus a total level of employment of 120% usually applies). The Committee verifies if the conditions to apply for the grant are met and assesses the appropriateness of the support.  Research: 120% Care Grant (unibe.ch)
Prix Lux Equality Award Committee At the University of Bern, there are numerous groups of persons and units who are committed to equal opportunities. Such commitment is rewarded. The University of Bern will award the Prix Lux equal opportunities prize for the sixth time in 2022. The jury consists of one representative each of the Executive Board of the University of Bern, the intermediate staff association, the Student Union of the University of Bern (SUB), the cantonal equal opportunities office, the Communication and Marketing Office and two representatives of the Office for Gender Equality. "Excellence and Equal Opportunity" Working Group What exactly is that, "excellence"? What distinguishes an excellent researcher? What are the concepts behind this term? These are the questions addressed by the university-wide research group "Critical discourse on excellence", which is coordinated by the Office for Gender Equality.
